Aircraft Ownership, Explained

Owning an aircraft touches your finances, your time, and your risk tolerance all at once, and the learning curve is steep if you are doing it for the first time. This page is the map, with links to the detailed guide for each stage.

High Performance Aviation has worked with owners and buyers of high-end piston aircraft, turboprops, and light-to-mid-size jets since 2009, and this is a straight look at what ownership actually involves.

Defining what you actually need

Every ownership decision starts before you look at a listing. Mission comes first: how many hours a year you will actually fly, seats and range, and your realistic budget once you count everything beyond the purchase price. Buyers who skip this step tend to end up with an airplane that is either underpowered for their mission or expensive overkill for it.

Understanding the true cost of ownership

The purchase price is the smallest recurring number. Hangar rent, insurance, annual inspections, and a maintenance reserve run every year whether the aircraft flies or not. A realistic, itemized annual budget, built before you buy, is the single best predictor of whether ownership feels manageable or stressful.

Financing the purchase

Aircraft loans work differently than a car or home loan: shorter terms, larger down payments, and lenders who look closely at both the buyer and the airframe. HPA does not lend in-house, but we have multiple lending resources we can connect you with, and financing typically closes in about two weeks once you are working with the right lender.

Protecting yourself with a prebuy inspection

A prebuy is the single most important step between an accepted offer and closing. It is an independent evaluation that tells you what you are actually buying, not what the logbooks and listing photos suggest. HPA facilitates that scope for you rather than handing you a shop’s phone number and stepping back.

Knowing what your aircraft is worth

Aircraft value is not a single number you look up once. It moves with make and model, total time, engine and prop time, avionics, damage history, and market demand. HPA offers a no-obligation, generalized valuation discussion on any booked call. A detailed valuation or desktop appraisal comes later, once we have your logbooks, current photos, and a formal engagement in place.

Selling when it is time

Every ownership journey eventually reaches a decision point: upgrade, downsize, or exit. Selling well starts with the same discipline as buying well: honest pricing, proper preparation, and getting the aircraft in front of qualified buyers rather than just listed somewhere and hoped for.

How HPA fits into every stage

HPA has served the Houston area since 2009 and operated from Conroe (KCXO) since 2014, and over that time has transacted well over 100 aircraft on behalf of clients, representing buyers and sellers across those deals. Founder Brandon Ray has also personally bought and sold seven of his own. That means one point of contact whether you are searching for your first airplane, budgeting for year three, or getting ready to sell, backed by Brandon’s credentials: ATP, CFI, CFII, and MEI certificates, seven Master Instructor awards, an A&P certificate, a Wharton MBA, and multiple PIC type ratings in jets.
